Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on 5 February 1985 in Santo Antonio, Portugal. Named “Ronaldo” after his father’s favorite actor, Ronald Reagan. In 1997 Ronaldo started his professional career by joining Sporting Lisbon where he became the only player ever to play for Sporting's U-16, U-17, U-18, B-team, and first team, all within one season. He scored two goals in this first division debut while featuring for the UEFA Under 17 Championship.

After impressing Alex Ferguson in a match against Manchester United, Ronaldo was signed for £12.24 million in 2003. He reluctantly accepted the jersey No. 7 which previously been worn by players such as George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham. Ronaldo said; “the famous shirt was an extra source of motivation. I was forced to live up to such an honour."

After having won Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, FA Community Shield, UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup with Manchester United, Ronaldo signed with Real Madrid on 1 July 2009 for £80 million making him the most expensive football player in the world ever.
